The curtain went up on The Oldland Players’ first production in November 1967, and we have presented at least one show a year ever since. Normally we do two plays a year, in early summer and autumn, and in recent years have taken part in the One Act Drama festivals run by Bristol, Avon and Gloucestershire.
Our company covers a wide age range and even wider levels of experience. We pride ourselves on our team spirit and will always try to find roles for those who have never been involved with theatre before, as well as for those to whom the ‘boards’ have been a second home for many years! For many members the friendships they have formed in the group are as important as the productions themselves.
But without taking ourselves too seriously, we are serious about our drama. We put on most of our performances in the Oldland Village Club, which we turn into a Theatre Club for the two production weeks each year.
This informal style seems to generate great involvement with our audience, many of whom stay around for a drink and a chat with the cast after the show. Although many of our members come from outside the local community this involvement with it is important to us.
As a result our productions quite often sell out, and our approach seems to be just as successful in the One Act Festivals, where we have a string of awards and nominations across all aspects of drama.
That’s us, The Oldland Players.
